Proper nutrition is the keystone of a healthy and productive life. When you take in the nutrients your body needs, you provide the raw material for all the processes your body performs on a daily – and nightly – basis. Your nutritional choices have a profound influence on the level of well-being you can achieve.
When dining out, you should choose to eat meats that are not breaded or fried. These foods will be loaded with grease and fats. A healthier alternative is to choose meats that are grilled, broiled or baked. Just about any meat can be cooked in the healthier way and it will taste much better too.
Feed your child healthy snacks. Ignore those pre-packaged sugary snacks, and introduce your child to healthy snacks disguised as fun treats! Dip a banana in vanilla yogurt, roll it in crushed cereal, and freeze. Spread frozen yogurt on two graham crackers and fill with sliced bananas to make a tasty ‘sandwich’. Mix cornflakes with peanut butter, roll into balls and cover with crushed graham crackers. Spread peanut butter on apple slices. Mix together cereal, nuts and dried fruit in a small bag for a healthy travel snack.
Understand the different types of carbohydrates. Recent food fads have emphasized the value of “low-carb” diets, but reducing carbohydrates indiscriminately can actually hurt your diet. Eating foods rich in complex carbohydrates, like brown rice or whole-grain bread, can help you lose weight by making you feel fuller, so you’ll eat less.
Though it may go without saying a great piece of nutrition advice is to stop going out to eat. Not only are most the foods processed and not natural, but they are fried and loaded with fats and bad carbs. By avoiding fast foods you can and will improve your overall health and nutrition.
It is important for you to chose the appropriate portion size. The feeling of satiety, being full, takes a while to travel from the stomach to the brain. Eat a little bit less than you think you might need and then wait a few minutes. If you’re still hungry, eat some more, but chance are you will feel full with less food.
Protein intake is really important for staying full and minimizing portion sizes. This does not mean that double cheeseburgers are a great idea for lunch, but it does mean that simple proteins like nuts and legumes can be excellent for keeping you full for longer. These natural energy sources are great for sustained energy.
Make the effort to read the labels on products. The essential information is the calories (they are what count for controlling your weight), dietary fiber (whole grains, vegetables and fruits are what fills you), as well as serving size, fat, sodium and sugar per serving. Checking food labels is an easy way to eat nutritionally, by staying aware of what you are putting in your body, which ends up leading to a healthy you.
When you apply the basic principles of nutrition, you maximize the quality of the fuel you feed your body. This is an important step in your overall health and wellness plan. Like using the proper fuel in you car, proper nutrition can optimize the overall performance of your body. Remember, don’t live to eat, instead, eat to live!
