I bet you didn’t know it was easy to get a DUI, did you? Well, trust me, it is. I’m a DUI attorney, and I have clients come into my office all the time that did one wrong thing that led to another wrong thing that led to another wrong thing that led to a DUI charge and a lot of headaches. Pay attention to find out what it is.
Here is the typical scenario for my DUI clients. They are out with some friends having a couple of drinks. They aren’t drinking heavily, they are responsible adults, after all. When the gathering is over, the person gets in their car and starts out toward their house. All of a sudden, there is a cop car behind them pulling them over. They stop, the cop comes up and asks the typical question – “do you know why I stopped you?” When my guy answers no, the cop tells him, “you’re tabs were expired.” Then he says “how much have you had to drink tonight?” and it’s all downhill from there.
Yep, you guessed it, the easiest way to get a DUI is to commit some minor traffic infraction. These include having a headlight out (or tail light), not using your turn signal, speeding, having expired tabs (registration), failing to stop, turning at an intersection when you aren’t allowed, the list goes on and on. Once the cop gets you pulled over he can launch into DUI mode.
Whenever I talk to people and they find out I’m a Seattle DUI attorney I immediately get hit with all kinds of questions about field sobriety tests and breath tests and pennies in the mouth. But I always tell them the best advice I could ever give them is to make sure their car maintenance is up and that they drive safely when they are going home.
If you don’t want to see a DUI attorney, don’t drive drunk. If you want to drive after drinking (which is perfectly legal) make sure you follow the traffic rules. That way you can be assured that no cops are going to pull you over for something stupid.
