First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding. No doubt your head is spinning with all of the things to plan and consider. There are so many things to do, but there is one that you can do first to make all the others a little easier and cement the support group you will need during this stressful time (yes, planning a wedding and getting married is stressful even if it is a good and happy kind of stress): choose your bridesmaids. Bridesmaids are there to assist the bride in all the planning, emotional craziness, and everything else that comes with planning a wedding.
Who to Choose
Some people have so many friends or such large families that narrowing down the bridesmaid list to a reasonable number is a difficult task. Others may find that their close friendships are very few and they need to scrounge up a few extra bridesmaids to match the number of groomsmen. When choosing your bridesmaids, keep in mind that their primary job is to be there for you. If you need to narrow down the list, the upcoming months will be easier on you if you choose friends who are local and complement your weak spots when it comes to planning your wedding. If you have difficulty planning, choose bridesmaids who are good at planning and keeping the information organized. If you need creative artistic bridesmaids, choose some friends who have those traits. If you tend to be indecisive, choose at least one bridesmaid who you trust to help you make decisions. While convention and friendship may dictate some of your bridesmaid choices, using their strengths and filling in the weak spots can help ensure that you and your bridesmaids have lots of fun and less stress while planning the wedding.
A Word about Bridesmaids’ Dresses
At some point in the planning you will start looking at formal dresses and trying to choose dresses for your bridesmaids. While your bridesmaids are hopefully wonderful and cooperative and willing to wear a wide variety of dresses, this is one aspect of your wedding plans where you should actively seek their input. After all they will be the people wearing those dresses, and they will appreciate it all the most if the dress is conventional enough to be reused, a style and color that flatters them and complements your wedding decor, and not outrageously priced. With the right dress they’ll not only love looking great at your wedding, but they will be all the more happy and feel that their hard work on your behalf has been appreciated.
