Traditionally many people have allowed their dog to get some exercise while they are out at work by attaching a long lead to their dog kennel. However, over time people have started to buy dog exercise pens. These pens allow the dog the freedom to run around and play without getting tangled in their lead and without the danger of him breaking out of the garden and getting run over.
Though you can buy ready-made exercise pens for dogs many people decide to buy all the parts separately and build one themselves. This may sound difficult but you actually don’t need much experience or skill to be able to do a good job. Start by using some string to outline the shape of the pen, ensuring that it is large enough for your dog to be able to run around in. Buy some posts which are high enough that your particular dog won’t be able to leap over them (if your dog is particularly bouncy or large then you may want to put a roof onto the pen). You will need four corner posts and, if the pen is very large, posts situated every ten feet along the sides. Dig deep holes and set the posts into cement. Only once the concrete is completely set can you continue with the rest of the build. Put a rail around the top so that the wire can be fixed at either end and at the top.
Rent or buy a fence stretcher to help you stretch the chain link wire between the posts and nail it into place. Finally fix the gate into place and make sure that it has a good strong latch and lock so that your pet has no chance of escape.
The final touch is to put accessories such as food and water bowls, a comfy bed and lots of toys in it to make your dog feel happy and at home.
